Both Milligan College cross-country teams, along with 12 individuals, have been recognized by the NAIA and U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their success in the classroom following the conclusion of the fall semester, announced the USTFCCCA Thursday.

Sophomores Avery DeWolf and Bekah Owen were the first two of four Buffs to finish in the top 100 as the Milligan College women’s cross country team ran to an eighth-place finish at the 2019 NAIA Women’s Cross Country National Championship Friday at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

A steady rise in the national poll and steady progress through the regular season has the No. 4 Milligan College women’s cross country team primed for the 40th annual NAIA Women’s Cross Country National Championship, set for Friday, Nov. 22, in Vancouver, Washington.

A strong finish at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship helped the Milligan College women make another significant move in the national spotlight. After landing runner-up to No. 1 SCAD Atlanta by two points, the Buffs moved to No. 4 in the latest national poll.

Sophomore Bekah Owen led a group of six Buffaloes inside the top 13 as the No. 6 Milligan College women’s cross country team earned the Appalachian Athletic Conference runner-up Saturday morning at Boling Park. Milligan finished second to top-ranked SCAD Atlanta by two points.

In a meet which pitted two nationally ranked cross-country programs against one another, Milligan College came out on top in both the women’s race and the men’s race.

Sophomore Gabrielle Mardis led the No. 9 Milligan College women’s cross-country team to a runner-up finish in a deep field heavy with NCAA Division I and Division II competition Friday evening at the Queen City Invitational at McAlpine Creek Park. Mardis ran to a fourth-place finish individually with a 5k time of 18:16.

Both the No. 15 men and No. 17 women of the Milligan College cross country program ran an excellent race in the college’s first event on campus in its 20-year history. In a dual meet against Appalachian Athletic Conference member Tennessee Wesleyan, Milligan ran away with the victory on both sides.

With a 2018 postseason finish of No. 12 and a 2019 preseason ranking of No. 17, Milligan College’s cross-country team looks to have another big year this fall.
