Cross-country teams honored for success in classroom
Both Milligan College cross-country teams, along with 12 individuals, have been recognized by the NAIA and U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their success in the classroom following the conclusion of the fall semester, announced the USTFCCCA Thursday.
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 30, 2020) – Both Milligan College cross-country teams, along with 12 individuals, have been recognized by the NAIA and U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their success in the classroom following the conclusion of the fall semester, announced the USTFCCCA Thursday.
The Milligan men, with a 3.25 grade-point average, were among 44 teams to earn the All-Academic honor. Andrew Burton, Jake Crow, Alex Mortimer, Pablo Rivas and Tim Thacker represented the Buffs as All-Academic Individuals.
The Milligan women, at 3.47 as a team, were among 52 women's teams to receive the team honor, while Hannah Bell, Avery DeWolf, Amy Ferguson, Katlyn Haas, Gabrielle Mardis, Bekah Owen and Erica Stone landed the individual honors.
"It's not easy being a student-athlete at Milligan," Head Coach Chris Layne said. "Our kids are being challenged in the classroom and they are also being challenged on the field of play. I'm extremely proud of the culture our team has created. They hold themselves accountable, they hold each other accountable, and I know they make a ton of sacrifices to ensure they are maximizing their educational opportunity."
In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, among other qualifiers. In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and qualify for the national championship meet.
