Buffs win third consecutive AAC match with sweep over St. Andrews
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (August 22, 2022) – The Milligan University volleyball team swept Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) opponent St. Andrews in three straight sets Saturday afternoon in Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (August 22, 2022) – The Milligan University volleyball team swept Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) opponent St. Andrews in three straight sets Saturday afternoon in Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
Milligan evens its overall record at 6-6 overall and rises to 3-1 in league play. St. Andrews fell to 1-11, 1-4 AAC.
The Buffs climbed out to a six to two advantage with three different players recording kills in the early part of the first set. The Knights trimmed the lead down to three before Milligan scored three straight to make it a 13-7 score. Following back to back points from St. Andrews, the Buffs answered with an 8-2 run to make it 21-11. Milligan closed out the first set with a score of 25-15 after a Greyson Stevens kill put a stop to any hopes of a comeback from the Knights.
The second set saw a back-and-forth battle in the early goings with the Buffs leading 12-11. After an attacking error from St. Andrews, Milligan reeled off a six-two run to go ahead by five points in the latter stages. The Knights would not go away quietly as they cut the lead down to just two to make it a 18-16 game. The Buffs then scored seven of the next ten points to put themselves in the driver's seat heading into the third set.
Four lead changes through the first six points kicked off the third set as Milligan took an early six to five lead. After trading points midway through the third, St. Andrews retook the lead 16-15. Following a tie game at 21 apiece, the Buffs closed the game out scoring four of the last six points to complete the sweep over the Knights.
Milligan was led offensively by Shelby Miller who racked up 13 kills in 27 attempts to finish with a .333 hitting percentage for the day. Ella Maiden ended second on the team with eight kills and a .375 hitting percentage in addition to five blocks. Stevens also had a nice game with five kills, four aces, and six total blocks.
Kolbie Greene and Paxton Adkins concluded with double-digit digs with 11 and ten respectively. Greene finished the day with a team-high 32 assists to go along with two blocks.
The Buffs travel to Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday evening for a matchup with the Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m.
