Volleyball falls to first-place Bryan

Milligan, Tenn. (October 9, 2021) — The Milligan University volleyball team fell in three sets to Bryan College on Tuesday evening in the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
The Buffs fall to 9-14 on the year and 7-6 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) competition. Bryan remains in first place after the win with a 13-1 conference record to go along with a 17-4 overall record. The Lions won the three-set match with scores of 26-24, 25-16 and 25-11.
The Buffs nearly completed an impressive comeback in the first set overcoming a deficit of five and multiple deficits of four. After going down 14-9, Milligan scored six of the next eight points to trim the lead down to just one point. Bryan was then able to secure four of the next five points to take a 20-16 lead winding down the stretch. However, the Buffs would not go away quietly. Seven of the next ten went in favor of Milligan to knot the game at 23. Despite a phenomenal comeback effort, Bryan took the first set with a final of 26-24.
The second set began by both teams countering one another going point for point up until midway through. After being tied at 14, Bryan reeled off an 11-2 run to beat the Buffs 25-16. Carley Gregory spiked four kills in the set to lead the Milligan offense. On the defensive side of the court, Layla Grant and Taylor Pavich racked up four digs apiece, bringing the team total to 48 after the second.
Bryan opened the third set on a 7-0 run to jump out to an early lead. Despite the seven-point deficit, the Buffs were able to stay within striking distance scoring nine of the next thirteen points to trim the lead down to 11-9. The Lions then tacked on the next eleven points to essentially put the game away in the third set with a final score of 25-11.
Gregory finished the match with a team-high 13 kills on a .300 hitting percentage. Abigail Byington logged five kills and three total blocks.
Kolbie Greene, appearing for the first time since the opening week, turned in a solid stat sheet both offensively and defensively tallying up 10 assists to go along with 11 digs. Paxton Adkins finished the night with a team-high 12 digs while Layla Grant and Greyson Stevens both ended up with 10.
Next up, Milligan will take on Brenau College for Senior Night in a home matchup Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. in Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
