DAYTON, Tenn. (Oct. 9, 2020) – Junior Layla Grant recorded her 1,000th career dig Friday night, but the Milligan University women's volleyball team dropped the Appalachian Athletic Conference contest to Bryan, 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18).
Grant led Milligan's defense with 17 digs on the night after entering the match only 13 shy of the milestone. She now stands at 1,004 digs for her career.
Milligan, looking to avenge a loss to Bryan earlier this season, dug a hole in the form of losing the first two sets and was unable to battle back. In the first set, the Buffs had a few late leads, including 20-18 and 21-20, but Bryan responded with the final five points.
Using that momentum, Bryan then opened the second set on a 15-6 run, although the Buffs would respond with a 14-5 run to tie the set. Again, Bryan closed the frame with the last five points to take a 2-0 lead.
Trailing 2-0, Milligan answered in a big way in set number three, winning five of the last six points to make it a 2-1 deficit. The Lions, however, had the final answer when they closed the match on an 11-3 run.
Carley Gregory led the Buffs attack with 13 kills while Elise Gregory followed close behind with eight kills. Seven other Buffs registered at least one kill.
Up next, Milligan returns to Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Tuesday, Oct. 13, for an AAC matchup against Kentucky Christian as the Buffs will look to avenge their loss from the first match of the season. The match can be viewed online at milliganbuffs.com.
