Buffs make quick work of Montreat
Julia Codispoti and Carley Gregory led the way with 12 kills apiece, and the Milligan University women’s volleyball team picked up an easy win inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse Tuesday night, defeating Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Montreat in three sets, 30-28, 25-17, 25-23.
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (Oct. 6, 2020) – Julia Codispoti and Carley Gregory led the way with 12 kills apiece, and the Milligan University women's volleyball team picked up an easy win inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse Tuesday night, defeating Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Montreat in three sets, 30-28, 25-17, 25-23.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Buffs and brought them back to .500 at 3-3 on the season.
The kills from Codispoti and Gregory were match highs and came alongside only six combined errors. Taylor Pavich also had a nice night with nine kills to only one error. Sydney Hurd tallied 38 assists, and Layla Grant posted 12 digs, both match highs.
Milligan trailed early in the first set but the teams kept it close the whole way. Montreat went on a 4-0 run late in the set to surge into a 25-24 lead and again had a match point at 26-25, but Milligan answered on both occasions and ultimately ended the first frame on back-to-back kills by Codispoti and Pavich.
The Buffs then used the momentum from the first set and used an early run of 7-2 in the second set to go ahead 11-5. Codispoti capped the middle set with a kill to complete a 13-8 run as Milligan won set number two 25-17.
The third set looked much like the first, as Montreat took an early lead but both teams kept it close the rest of the way. Milligan surged ahead near the end with a 7-3 run to go ahead 20-16 only to see the lead disappear after Montreat used an identical run to tie the set 23-23. Two attack errors later, Milligan clinched the third set and the match for its second home win of the season.
Up next, Milligan heads to Dayton, Tennessee, next Friday, Oct. 9, for an AAC matchup again Bryan at 6:30 p.m. The Buffs will next be back in Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Tuesday, Oct. 13, against Kentucky Christian. The match can be viewed online at milliganbuffs.com.
