Volleyball wins ninth straight at St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C. (Oct. 26, 2019) – Julia Codispoti, Julie Dockery and Sarah Grace Larkey posted double digits in kills to lead the Milligan College volleyball team to its ninth straight victory Saturday at St. Andrews University. The win kept Milligan perfect in October and featured a 5-2 Buffalo run in the fifth set as Milligan won 17-25, 25-16, 25-21, 21-25, 15-12.
Teams were tied 10-10 in the fifth set before kills by Dockery and Carley Gregory helped Milligan go ahead 13-10. Four points later, Larkey finished the match with a kill to clinch the victory.
By the numbers
Codispoti (13 kills), Dockery (12 kills) and Larkey (11 kills) led the attack with Kellee Geren (42 assists) orchestrating most of the offense. Geren also tallied 21 digs for her 14th double-double of the season. Layla Grant registered 28 digs, marking her seventh match of the season posting 25 or more.
Milligan outkilled St. Andrews 54-47 and held the Knights to an attack percentage of .075. Geren found eight targets who recorded at least one kill, including the aforementioned trio plus Ashelyn Vandergriff, Gregory and Alyssa Gibson who each had four or more.
Set by set
Milligan fell behind, dropping the first set after a 15-6 Knights run, but bounced back to win sets No. 2 and No. 3. There was only one tie and no lead changes in those two sets, the tie coming at 9-9 in the second set, just before Milligan handed St. Andrews a 16-7 run to even the match up at one set apiece.
Milligan never trailed in the third set, but SAU kept it close never trailing by more than five points. Dockery finished the set and a 4-1 run with a service ace to put Milligan ahead two games to one.
After St. Andrews tied the match back up after set number four, the Knights opened up the deciding set with the first two points, but Milligan answered with the next four points to surge into the lead. Milligan then followed with the final 5-2 run moments later to win the match.
Up next
Milligan rounds out the season with its last two matches at home. First up will be senior day Tuesday, Oct. 29, against Montreat College. This will be followed by the regular-season finale Thursday, Nov. 7, against Union College. Both matches are set to start at 6:30 p.m. inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
