Buffs fall to 2018 AAC champ
Kellee Geren broke the all time assist record Saturday afternoon in Waleska, but the Milligan College volleyball team fell to reigning Appalachian Athletic Conference champion Reinhardt in three straight sets (31-29, 25-20, 25-14).
WALESKA, Ga. (Sept. 28, 2019) – Kellee Geren broke the all time assist record Saturday afternoon in Waleska, but the Milligan College volleyball team fell to reigning Appalachian Athletic Conference champion Reinhardt in three straight sets (31-29, 25-20, 25-14).
Geren's accomplishment
Geren reached 4,000 career assists two weeks ago on Saturday, Sept. 14, against Columbia College, then tied the record Friday night against Point University with 4,279. Saturday, she broke the Milligan record for career assists surpassing Chelsea Spivey and reaching 4,315 assists. Geren recorded double-doubles against both Point and Reinhardt, bumping her double-double record for the season up to nine.
Buffs battle with the Eagles
Milligan and Reinhardt fought it out in the first set with both teams having to score past the regulation ending score to determine the winner. The largest lead of the first set came from Milligan with four points. There were 31 ties throughout the entire set with Milligan tying the game up 25 times and Reinhardt tying the game up six times. Reinhardt clutched the win with three kills in a row in the final three rallies.
Milligan had the lead for over half the second set but the Eagles gained the lead for the first time of the set from back to back kills by Brittany Taksas to make the score 16-15. Reinhardt then went on a 10-5 run to beat the Buffs.
In the third set Milligan came out with an early lead but it was short lived as Reinhardt went on an 11-2 run and did not look back. Milligan had 10 attack errors in the third set compared to Reinhardt's two.
By the numbers
Reinhardt out killed Milligan 44 to 40. Milligan had 21 attack errors compared to Reinhardt's 15, and had seven service errors compared to the Eagles' three. Geren led the defense with 12 digs and her main offensive targets of the day were Carley Gregory with 14 kills, Julia Codispoti with 10 and Alyssa Gibson with nine.
With this weekend's matches the Buffs fall to 11-10 (5-4 AAC). Up next, Milligan travels to Montreat on Tuesday, Oct. 1, before returning home to face Bryan on Friday, Oct. 4.
