Milligan Tennis Squads Nab Perfect 7-0 Sweeps of Johnson on Senior Day
MILLIGAN, Tenn. - The Milligan University men's and women's tennis teams conquered the Johnson University Royals on Senior Day at Mathes Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, as they each achieved perfect 7-0 sweeps.
In women's doubles, Marta Miralles and Sophie Dunman earned a 6-2 win in the No. 1 doubles match to begin the day. Lee Ann Endler and Lauren Wimmer then pulled off a 7-5 triumph in the second doubles competition. The final doubles matchup was won by Trinity Fox and Tiana Shelton, who did not lose a game, winning 6-0.
Men's doubles was a similar story, as Ryan Thomas and Michal Curlej won 6-2 in the No. 1 match, while Thiago Petry and Marcos Moreno lost just a single game in a 6-1 victory. The No. 3 pairing of Brayden Kennedy and Tomas Tenil won 6-4 to help MU sweep the doubles competition.
In women's singles, Endler began the party with a simple 6-2, 6-4 triumph, increasing Milligan's women's squad's lead to 2-0. Dunman then demolished her competition in the second matchup, winning 6-1, 6-1. Wimmer earned a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Shelton had the toughest matchup of all, winning in a three-set tiebreak by a final of 4-6, 6-1, 10-6. Laurel Rich then won 6-3, 6-1 and Hannah Dove notched a 6-3, 6-0 win of her own.
For the men, it was Gonzaga Lafarga who started the contest in singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Curlej then followed that with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in match No. 2. Martin Mercarder then won 7-5, 6-1 and Moreno snagged a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Thomas' 6-4, 6-0 win in the No. 5 matchup, followed by Kennedy's 6-3, 6-3 win, clinched the perfect 7-0 result for the Buffaloes.
The men's season will continue with a non-conference neutral-site contest against Midway on Tuesday, Apr. 8 in Williamsburg, Ky. at University of the Cumberlands.
