Buffaloes Tennis Teams Handle Coastal Georgia in Non-Conference Victories
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – On Thursday, the Milligan University tennis teams concluded their two-day event in Hilton Head, S.C. with a bout against the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners. The Buffaloes swept the day, allowing just two singles wins by Coastal Georgia en route to 4-1 (M) and 6-1 (W) victories.
Gonzaga Lafarga started off the men's singles competition in grand fashion, earning a bludgeoning 6-1, 6-1 win in match No. 1. Michal Curlej nabbed the No. 3 match, grabbing a 6-1, 7-6 decision. Thiago Petry was responsible for the triumphant result in the No. 5 singles matchup, notching a 6-4, 6-1 win to round out singles.
In doubles, Milligan managed two down-to-the-wire victories, as Ryan Thomas and Curlej combined to win 7-6 (7-3) in the No. 2 contest. In the No. 3 battle, Brayden Kennedy and Tomas Tenil similarly beat their opponents by a 7-6 (7-2) final to help MU win 4-1 by earning the doubles point.
Milligan's women had a rather simple roll through the singles battles, as Marta Miralles faced the most attrition of the Buffs' winners. She achieved a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 win in her No. 1 singles matchup. Lauren Wimmer put together a 6-2, 6-1 annihilation of her opposition in the No. 3 singles match, while Tiana Shelton grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 4 bout. Trinity Fox was able to handle her counterpart simply with a 6-0, 6-3 win in the fifth matchup, and Laurel Rich earned a victory in the No. 6 tilt by forfeit.
Miralles and Sophie Dunman teamed up to snag the No. 1 doubles match by a 6-2 final tally, starting things off right for Milligan. The Buffs earned the doubles point by forfeit of the No. 3 doubles battle, as Shelton and Rich earned a free win to lock up the 6-1 final tally.
Both squads will return to Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 2 p.m. in Pikeville, Ky. against the Bears of the University of Pikeville.
