GAINESVILLE, Ga. – On Wednesday evening, the Milligan University women's soccer team continued their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) schedule with a bout at Brenau University. In what was a tight battle, the Buffs ended up posting another shutout, which was their sixth of the season; in a 2-0 victory.
In the match's 28th minute, Lauren Hawkley converted on her ninth goal of the 2024 campaign on a beautiful feed from Natalie Roper. Otherwise, there wasn't a ton going on in the opening half, as the two sides combined for only four shots on net. Milligan dominated the number of chances in the first half, holding a 9-2 shot advantage after the first 45 minutes.
Several more chances would be levied by both sides in the second half, as 11 shots were put on goal between the two teams. Milligan's Halle Steele would grab an unassisted goal in the 84th minute to pad the Buffaloes' lead late. Luckily, Akyla Walcott was able to supply six saves in the final 45 minutes to help lead Milligan to a triumph.
Lucy Knowles took a team-high five shots with a trio of them being stopped by the Brenau keeper. Roper had a similar day, launching four shots, with two of them requiring a save. Steele's three shots ended up resulting in one goal, while Mariah Shull took two shots and sent one of the two on net. Emma True and the goal-scoring Hawkley were responsible for the rest of the shots on frame.
Walcott's impressive day between the pipes with seven saves against seven shots on net pushes her season record to 6-5-2.
The Buffs are rolling and have won seven of their last nine contests. A test lies ahead, as the AAC's second-place Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs will host Milligan on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m.
