MILLIGAN, Tenn. – The Milligan University women's soccer team was defeated by the No. 10-ranked Cumberland University Phoenix 5-0 in their season-opening game at Anglin Field on Saturday.
The Buffs fall to 0-1 on the year while Cumberland moves to 2-0.
In the 15th and 18th minutes, the Phoenix scored a pair of goals to make it 2-0 early on. Then, the visitors tacked on a third goal in the 30th minute to lead 3-0 entering the intermission.
Two more tallies were put up by Cumberland in the second half, as they scored in the 67th minute, as well as the 83rd.
Facing a top-notch opponent, Milligan had just three shots in the game, with two of them from freshman Kylie Malone and the other off the boot of Lauren Hawkley. None of the three shots were on goal.
Akyla Walcott did have seven saves on the 12 shots on goal that she faced, as she was bombarded by a prolific offensive attack that took 25 total shots in the bout.
The Buffs will now travel to the No. 1-ranked University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky. on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.
