Women’s Soccer falls to Tennessee Wesleyan 5-2

MILLIGAN, Tenn. (October 21, 2023) – The Milligan University women's soccer team fell to Tennessee Wesleyan 5-2 on senior night at Anglin Field on Saturday.

The Buffs fall to 7-8-1 on the season and 6-6 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play. TWU rises to 12-1-1, 11-1 AAC.

Mia Brown made six first-half saves to keep the Bulldogs off the board in the first half. Milligan managed just one shot on frame in the first 45 minutes as Taylor Dawson's free kick was saved.

TWU owned an 11-2 edge in shots in a scoreless first half.

Natalie Roper fired a shot on goal in the 55th minute but was denied. The Bulldogs scored the game's first goal on a penalty kick in the 58th minute.

The Bulldogs added on to their lead in the 68th minute. Brown deflected away a long-range attempt, then stuffed a point-blank shot before TWU pounced on the second rebound to go ahead 2-0.

Lauren Hawkley brought the margin to 2-1 in the 73rd minute. Mariah Shull played the ball up the right sideline to Angeleena Waaland. Waaland sent a cross through the penalty area to a charging Lauren Hawkley, who made a touch to her right and beat the TWU keeper for her seventh goal of the season.

TWU struck back in the 78th minute by poking in a loose ball inside the six-yard box to lead 3-1. The Bulldogs added another tally on a long-range strike in the 80th.

Roper sent a lead pass to Waaland in the penalty area. She tapped the ball over the charging goalkeeper for her seventh goal of the season to bring the margin to 4-2 in the 86th minute.

The Bulldogs added an empty-net goal in the final two minutes to bring the score to its final margin of 5-2.

TWU outshot Milligan 26-6 (17-5 SOG). Brown made a dozen saves in her first career start as a Buff.

The Buffs host Union on Wednesday.
