BECKLEY, W.Va. (September 9, 2023) – The Milligan University women's soccer team tied WVU Tech 1-1 on Saturday afternoon in the Buffs' final nonconference game on Saturday afternoon.
Milligan moves to 1-2-1 on the season while WVU Tech is 0-5-1.
The game was originally slated to start at 3:00 p.m. but was pushed back due to weather. Neither team scored in the first half as Milligan outshot WVU Tech 6-4 but the Golden Bears owned a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.
In the opening five minutes of the second half Lauren Hawkley slipped behind the WVU Tech defense and sent a left-to-right cross through the six-yard box but could not connect with a Buff at the right post. Minutes later, Hawkley centered a pass to Natalie Roper, who blasted a shot right at the Golden Bears' goalkeeper.
Milligan finally broke through with the game's first goal in the 66th minute with Hawkley cashing in her first goal as a Buff. Nora Pugh tracked down a pass to the deep right corner, juke a defender and sent a grounded cross through the penalty area. Roper let the ball roll by and Hawkley gave the Buffs a 1-0 lead by beating the WVU Tech keeper.
The Golden Bears tied the game in the 82nd minute as a looping cross attempt from well outside the 18-yard box hit off the left post and into the goal.
The Buffs made a late push with Hawkley volleying an attempt wide right with just over two minutes remaining. Roper stole a pass deep in WVU Tech territory and had her shot stopped by a diving save by the Golden Bear keeper off her line.
In the final 10 seconds of regulation, Milligan earned a free kick just beyond the 18-yard box but the kick went awry as time expired.
Both teams finished with 11 shots as WVU Tech had a slight (8-7) edge in shots on goal. Akyla Walcott made seven saves in the draw.
Hawkley and Roper led the Buffs with three shots apiece.
Milligan opens Appalachian Athletic Conference play against defending AAC regular season and tournament champion, Truett McConnell, at Anglin Field on Wednesday evening.
