Knight and Murr score in key AAC win at St. Andrews
LAURINBURG, N.C. (October 19, 2022) – Shelby Knight and McKinna Murr scored their first goals as Buffs and the Milligan University women’s soccer team scored an important 2-0 win over St. Andrews on Wednesday.
LAURINBURG, N.C. (October 19, 2022) – Shelby Knight and McKinna Murr scored their first goals as Buffs and the Milligan University women's soccer team scored an important 2-0 win over St. Andrews on Wednesday.
The Buffs collected a crucial three points in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) standings with three games to play. Milligan moves to 3-7-3 on the year and 2-6-2 in AAC play. St. Andrews falls to 3-7-1, 3-6-1 AAC.
The Buffs established a 1-0 lead in the game's 10th minute as Ashlen Burch lofted a cross from the right side into the center of the penalty area. Knight volleyed a shot into the lower right corner for the opening goal.
At the end of the first half, Audra Morgan nearly added on to the Buffs' lead. In the final minute of the period Autumn Daniels won a Knights' goal kick and quickly forwarded a pass to Morgan who fired a shot on goal that required a diving save from SAU's goalie. The rebound trickled away from the goalkeeper but settled just out of reach of Kelsey Miller.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Hannah Chatterton sent a cross to the opposite side of the St. Andrews penalty area. The ball settled about 10 yards beyond the right post where Murr pounced on the ball and fired in her first collegiate tally in the bottom left corner of the goal.
St. Andrews sent a free kick on a hop into the six-yard box but Lauren Davies made a leaping grab to prevent the goal. In the 64th minute. Davies recorded another save on a free kick in the 70th minute and stopped the Knights' last shot in the 84th.
Milligan outshot St. Andrews 24-4 on the day and held a 14-4 edge in shots on goal.
The Buffs host No. 23 Reinhardt on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
