LAURINBURG, N.C. (Oct. 21, 2020) – Poppy Smith scored an equalizing goal in the first half of action, but Milligan University's women's soccer team came up short, 2-1, to St. Andrews University Wednesday afternoon on the road. The loss set Milligan back for the second straight game after starting the season 6-0, but the Buffs remained second in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, only four points off the lead.
Poppy's goal, her fifth of the season, came in the 31st minute and brought the match back to a tie after St. Andrews had pulled ahead in the ninth minute of play. Milligan earned several other scoring chances, forcing SAU goalkeeper Joi Sturdivant to make seven saves, but a goal from the Knights in the 53rd minute proved to be the difference.
Milligan, now 6-2 on the season, maintained its high scoring differential against opponents this season, leading 24-6 in goals versus goals against. The win for St. Andrews marked its fourth straight but snapped a streak of two straight shutouts the Knights had posted.
Up next, Milligan comes home for another midweek match next week to face Montreat on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 5 p.m. It will be the first of three remaining home games for the Buffs.
