Smith earns AAC player of the week
Senior Poppy Smith scored two second-half goals to help the Milligan University women’s soccer team remain perfect, and for her effort has been named Appalachian Athletic Conference offensive player of the week. The AAC made the announcement Monday for the week ending Oct. 11.

(Oct. 12, 2020) – Senior Poppy Smith scored two second-half goals to help the Milligan University women's soccer team remain perfect, and for her effort has been named Appalachian Athletic Conference offensive player of the week. The AAC made the announcement Monday for the week ending Oct. 11.
The award is the first weekly award of Smith's career.
Milligan trailed Brenau 1-0 on the road before Smith turned in two second-half goals to help Milligan improve to a 5-0 record. Smith's first goal came in the 60th minute to tie the match. She then scored in the 88th minute off an assist from Ellie Cachiaras to send the Buffs to victory.
Smith is one of 10 goal scorers for Milligan already this season, and the Buffs have outscored their opponents 19-2 through five games, all wins. Smith (three goals) is second only to Cachiaras (six goals) for the team lead in scoring.
Milligan next competes against Bluefield on the road on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The next home match is set for Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 5 p.m. against Montreat.
