No. 15 Milligan Women's Golf Wins with Castle as Medalist, Men Finish Third at East TN Collegiate
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — On Monday and Tuesday, the Milligan men's and women's golf teams played host to the East Tennessee Collegiate, held at Johnson City Country Club. Over the course of two rounds, the Buffalo women snatched a team title in a nine-team field, while the men finished just one stroke off the lead to finish in solid possession of third out of 10 programs.
For the women, Kate Castle was setting records all tournament, as she notched a six-under round on Monday to set a program record for the least strokes in an 18-hole round. That opening round gave her a lead that she would never relinquish, earning medalist honors with a tournament score of 142 strokes to finish two shots under par.
Mallory TeVrucht came out of the tournament with a 143-shot score, which put her at one under for the tourney. She finished in second place. She was closely followed by Sarah Castle, who turned in two solid scorecards to finish fourth on a 145-stroke two-round total. Both TeVrucht and S. Castle earned All-Tournament honors for finishing in the tourney's top five.
Catalina Easley's 146-shot tourney was good for a tie for a fifth-place finish, as her strong second round of 72 strokes helped seal the tiebreak to earn her All-Tournament honors, as well.
Also finishing in the top 10 for the women was Madison Butler, who finished four over on the tourney to finish in a tie for seventh.
The women accomplished a record round on day one, taking only 283 strokes, which is the fewest ever in the history of Milligan women's golf over an 18-hole round.
For the men, Manuel Gutierrez earned All-Tournament honors, finishing his event with a five-under score of 139 for the tourney. He topped his even-par round of 70 strokes in round one by taking 69 shots in round two to finish in third place.
Garrison Barton, Francisco de Bethencourt and Gustaf Lundberg finished tied with each other at two-under par for the tournament, taking 142 strokes apiece. For de Bethencourt, it was a slower round two that held him back from being an All-Conference honoree, as he showed out in round one to shoot a three-under round of 69 strokes.
The Milligan men had the best second-round score of any men's program at five under, but it came up just shy of the mark.
Next up on the golf schedule is a women's tournament this coming weekend at the Kahite Invitational at the Links at Kahite in Vonore, Tenn.
