No. 15 Buffs Women's Golf Places Second at St. Simons Island Invitational
St. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – On Monday and Tuesday, the No. 15-ranked Milligan women's golf squad took to the links at King & Prince Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga. for the St. Simons Island Invitational, hosted by College of Coastal Georgia.
In round one, the Buffs had players near the top of contention for an individual title, with Catalina Easley leading the way with a +1, 73-shot round to start the season. She birdied the 3rd, 4th and 16th holes in the first set of 18. In round two, Easley marched to another impressive output, turning in a +3, 75-shot card at the tourney's conclusion. With the effort, she notched a tie for third place as an individual with a +4, 148-shot score.
Sarah Castle started her first tourney of the season with a two-over par 74 in the first round. She picked up back-to-back birdie strokes on holes 12 and 13 during the round. With a +4 round of 76 shots on day two, S. Castle was able to post a tie for sixth place with an overall score of +6 on 150 strokes.
A +4 round of 76 strokes was finished off by Kate Castle to start the event, as she had a trio of under par holes with birdies on the 6th, 8th and 12th greens. Her second round of competition resulted in a 78-stroke score, which was six over par for the day. She combined her rounds to shoot +10 on 154 shots, which gave her sole possession of 10th place for the tournament.
Mallory TeVrucht had a strong start to the opening round, sitting at just two shots over par at the halfway point. She ended up with a five-over round of 77 shots with birdies on hole six and hole 12. Things were similar on day two, as she finished up the event with a +6 round to shoot a combined +11 on 155 strokes. The effort tied her for 11th place, overall.
The final counting golfer for the quad in round one was Bailey McGaha, who posted a round of 79 shots at +7. She posted birdies on the 4th and 14th holes on the course. McGaha concluded her two-day event with a 10-over-par round to put her at +17 in totality. She finished the tournament in a tie for 20th place.
Liz Miller (+9, 153), Madison Butler (+15, 159) and Chista Woodard (+29, 173) spent the tourney as individual competitors, not counting toward the team score.
As a team, the Buffs managed to finish second out of the 10 attending programs. No. 8-ranked Southeastern (Fla.) came away with the tournament title, shooting 22-over-par for the weekend. The Buffaloes finished the event with a +31 mark, combining for 607 strokes over the course of the tournament.
After a strong start to their 2024 fall season, the Milligan women now look forward to the East Tennessee Intercollegiate, hosted by the Buffs at Johnson City Country Club on Sept. 23 and 24.
