No. 12 Women’s Golf plays to runner-up finish at OUAZ Phoenix Invitational
SURPRISE, Ariz. (October 4, 2022) – The No. 12 Milligan University women’s golf team traveled to Arizona for the OUAZ Phoenix Invitational at the Sterling Grove Golf and Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
SURPRISE, Ariz. (October 4, 2022) – The No. 12 Milligan University women's golf team traveled to Arizona for the OUAZ Phoenix Invitational at the Sterling Grove Golf and Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The Buffs braved high temperatures of over 90 degrees, a dust storm and completed 54 holes of golf over two days. Milligan played 27 holes of golf on Monday before a dust storm postponed play on Monday before finishing up the tournament on Tuesday. Despite the difficult conditions, Milligan set its program record for team score at a 54-hole tournament.
Milligan finished second to No. 14 Ottawa Arizona as the host Spirit took the tourney title with 901 strokes. The Buffs matched OUAZ at 613 strokes (304-309) through the first two rounds, but OUAZ fired an even-par round to clinch the tournament title in the final round. Milligan finished with 921 strokes, 14 shots ahead of third-place Hope International.
Gabby Hammond led the charge for Milligan as she finished eighth overall in 47-golfer field. She was the fourth finisher among golfers who were playing the course for the very first time. Hammond finished with 227 strokes over 54 holes with rounds of 74, 76 and 77, the top score for any Milligan women's golfer at at three-round tournament.
Alayna Perryman joined Hammond in the top 10 as she placed 10th at 231 strokes. She had a low round of 74 to open the tourney. Kate Castle followed tied for 11th at 232 strokes and improved upon each round (79-78-75).
Mallory TeVrucht was the fourth Buff inside the top 15 as she finished 14th at 233 strokes with a low round of 75. Sarah Castle rounded out the Buffs' grouping in 25th.
Milligan returns to Tennessee to compete in the Tennessee National Match Play Challenge on Oct. 10-11.
