SAVANNAH, Ga. (October 30, 2022) – The Milligan University women's bowling team turned in an impressive showing at the SCAD Shootout as the Buffs' results on Saturday marked the best outing thus far for the squad.
Both days of the two-day event were played as stand-alone tournaments. The Buffs finished second to defending NAIA national champions SCAD Savannah with three top-10 finishers on Saturday and were fifth on Sunday. Both days featured four games of individual play and 15 baker games.
"Having two tournaments back-to-back in one weekend was a marathon, almost nine hours of bowling each day," said head coach Brian Rickert. "Our ladies finished second to the defending national champions SCAD Savannah and beat some very strong teams along the way."
SATURDAY
The Buffs totaled 6,227 pins on Saturday, finishing second only to SCAD Savannah. In individual play, Emily Cheesman was the runner-up with a four-game total of 798 (199.5 average). In her final individual game, Cheesman rolled a 241 to secure all-tournament honors for the second time this season.
Laci MacQuisten and Brianna Rickert joined Cheesman in the top 10. MacQuisten was sixth with 752 pins (188 average) and two games over 200. Rickert was seventh at 746 pints (186.5) with a high games of 231 and 203. Elizabeth Coutta finished 16th at 688 pints (172 average).
"Even though we are only six deep, everyone contributed to bringing home our best finish to date," said Rickert. "We could have easily had three ladies in the top five."
SUNDAY
On the second day of action, Milligan posted a team total score of 5,862 pins to finish fifth overall.
MacQuisten paced the Buffs in individual play with 721 pins (180.25 average) on Sunday.
"We had a hard time matching up our equipment to the oil pattern and we just couldn't put together enough big games in a row to make a run," said Rickert. "Sydney Swiercz came off the bench in the second game and provided us some spark with her best tournament of the year."
UP NEXT
The Buffs head to the Bowlero Southern Classic next weekend. It will be the Buffs' first Tier 1 tournament of the 2022-23 season.
"Our young teams got some excellent experience on how to play the lanes when they get extremely broken down by so many games," said Rickert. "We will be ready for the first Tier 1 tournament of the season next weekend in Atlanta."
