(RV) Buffs Women's Basketball Clobbers Montreat in Lone Meeting of 2024-25
MILLIGAN, Tenn. – The (RV) Milligan University women's basketball squad continued their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) schedule on Wednesday night at home versus the Montreat College Cavaliers. The Buffs were able to push their conference win streak to 12 games by a score of 109-78.
With the Buffs back at home, they were able to get started early and often in the first quarter taking a 33-24 edge. The Buffs came out the gates on fire, shooting 12-of-15 from the field, as well as 4-of-5 from three-point range.
The Buffs absolutely dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Cavaliers 32-5. They shot 6-of-10 (60%) from beyond the arc, which gave the Buffs a much-deserved lead headed into the break. Milligan entered the intermission shooting 65.7% from the field and 66.7% from three. They led 65-29 at the half.
Quarter number three was a much more closely contested between the Buffs and the Cavaliers, as both teams traded punches. The Milligan offense stayed hot throughout the quarter, maintaining a 66.7% shooting clip from the field. The Buffaloes' lead was 89-60 with one quarter to go.
The fourth frame was a back-and-forth affair with the Buffs able to maintain their lead throughout. The Buffs closed out the quarter shooting 7-of-13 (53%) to push their conference winning streak to twelve games, 109-78.
Lauren Longmire led the Buffs in scoring with 17 for the game on an impressive 6-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from deep. Lina Lyon, almost as efficient as can be, finished 8-of-9 from the field with 16 points. Jaycie Jenkins added 16 and Semaj Clark supplied 15 to take the Milligan starting five to 69 points for the game. Tessa Gibson and Kenzie Campbell each added 10 of their own off the bench for the Lady Buffs.
Jenkins and Jenna Hare tied for the team lead in assists, with three. Clark, Lyon and Campbell provided two each, while Longmire, Gibson, Naomi Atchley and McKenna Myers all had one.
Clark led the team with eight rebounds, as Jenkins had the next largest total with five. Hare added three, while Gibson, Campbell and Lexi Ervin came away with two apiece. Myers, Longmire, Lyon, Atchley, Renna Lane and Sabrina Espelet provided the final six boards.
Milligan was able to turn Cavalier mistakes into points winning the points-off-turnover battle in commanding fashion, 35-14. The team had eight steals and one block in the win, with Jenkins and Myers leading the way with two steals each. Clark had a steal and a block, as Longmire, Lyon and Campbell each had a theft.
Milligan will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 1 for a home battle against AAC foe Columbia International University inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
