(RV) Buffaloes Women's Basketball Nabs Tenth AAC Victory in a Row at Bluefield
BLUEFIELD, Va. – The (RV) Milligan University women's basketball team continued their foray through the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) slate with a makeup game on Monday. They traveled to Bluefield University for a tilt with the Rams that was rescheduled from Jan. 11. It ended up a one-sided affair throughout, as the Buffaloes were able to roar ahead and win by 40 points on the road, 91-51.
The opening quarter of the contest saw Milligan score 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting, while the Rams were able to keep pace, to a degree, scoring 18 points on 8-of-15 from the field. Bluefield would be unable to rival their opening period production.
In the second, the Rams fell to only 4-of-15 from the floor, with the Buffs taking clear advantage of that. Milligan's 11-of-17 clip afforded them 28 points, while Bluefield only could score 13 points. The Buffaloes' lead swelled to 21 points at the intermission, as they led 52-31.
Quarter number three was a down period for both offenses, though the Buffs were still able to put forth 17 points on 8-of-20 from the field. On the other end, Bluefield's 4-of-17 mark resulted in only eight points for the home side. Milligan's lead grew to 69-39 with 10 minutes left.
Milligan saw the final score end up 91-51 after a strong 9-of-17 final stanza from the floor. The Rams went just 5-of-17 and had 12 points. It was a coast to a 10th straight AAC win for the Lady Buffs, 91-51.
Four Milligan scorers finished in double-figures, with Jaycie Jenkins coming away with 19 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Semaj Clark (7-of-14) and Lauren Longmire (6-of-8) each put up 17, while combining for five made three-point shots. McKenna Myers scored 11 for the Buffs on an efficient 4-of-6 line with a 2-of-2 three-point clip.
Clark led the team with six assists, while Longmire passed out five and Lina Lyon dished out four. Kenzie Campbell was responsible for a pair of assists, and Naomi Atchley had one, as well.
Jenkins notched back-to-back double-doubles with her performance on Monday, grabbing 12 boards in addition to her 19 points. Clark came second on the team with eight backboards as the only other player with more than five for Milligan. Longmire, Renna Lane and Jenna Hare hauled in three each. The group of Myers, Lyon, Campbell, Atchley, Tessa Gibson and Lexi Ervin all had two rebounds.
Clark continued her torrid pace defensively with a trio of steals and a block. Additionally, Lyon had two steals, with Atchley adding a theft and a rejection. Ervin was responsible for the last steal.
Milligan now looks forward to Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m., when they travel to Barbourville, Ky. to face off with the Union Commonwealth University Bulldogs, looking for their 11th AAC win in a row.
