Jaycie Jenkins notches her 1,000th point as Milligan defeats St. Andrews in AAC Tournament
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (February 21, 2022) – Sophomore forward Jaycie Jenkins scored her 1,000th point and the Milligan University women’s basketball team rolled to a 80-54 victory over 15th-seeded St. Andrews in the opening round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Monday evening.
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (February 21, 2022) – Sophomore forward Jaycie Jenkins scored her 1,000th point and the Milligan University women's basketball team rolled to a 80-54 victory over 15th-seeded St. Andrews in the opening round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Monday evening.
Milligan rises to 23-7 on the season while St. Andrews concludes its season at 1-25.
Jenkins entered the game with 996 points through 50 career games and wasted little time joining the Buffs' 1,000-point club. She made a shot in traffic to open the game and drilled a right wing three in transition to surpass the 1,000 point mark. Lily Griffith drained a three to make it 8-0 Buffs in less than two minutes of action.
Kristy Galea, Kaylee Hendrickson and Madi Runnels all drained threes in a 12-3 spurt that put the Buffs ahead 22-7 and they would lead by double digits the rest of the way. Milligan led by 17 or more for the entire second quarter and owned a 40-23 halftime lead.
The Buffs opened the second half on a 10-4 run behind triples from Jenkins and Griffith extending the Milligan lead to 23 points with seven minutes to go in the third. Griffith was the primary source of offense in the quarter, scoring eight of her 14 on two-of-two shooting from the field and converted three of her four free-throw attempts.
The Knights outscored Milligan in the fourth 16-14 losing by a final deficit of 26 (80-54). Runnels was very efficient on the glass in the final quarter pulling down three of her four rebounds giving Milligan the rebounding advantage 9-6.
The Buffs recorded a season-high 25 assists on 30 made field goals, ending the night shooting at a 47 percent clip from the floor. Milligan also shot the lights out from behind the arc making 11 three-pointers at a rate of 45 percent. The rebounding battle went in favor of the Buffs who ended the night with a 48-27 advantage on the glass.
Jenkins scored a team-high 17 points on seven-of-16 shooting from the field and three-of-seven three-point range. Griffith added 14 points on four-of-five from the field and cashed in all three of her three-point attempts. Stacia Wilson finished with an extremely productive 13 points on six-of-seven from the floor and swiped three steals for the game.
Milligan will play at 7:30 p.m. at Meadowview Conference Resort and Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn. on Thursday evening for the quarterfinal round of the AAC Tournament.
