Late lead slips in Buffs road loss

MONTREAT, N.C. (Jan. 9, 2021) – Despite a 10-point run early in the fourth quarter and a double-double effort from freshman Jaycie Jenkins, the Milligan University women's basketball team lost on the road to Montreat, 67-61, Saturday afternoon in an Appalachian Athletic Conference game.
Montreat scored the last eight points and finished the game on a 15-2 run over the last five and a half minutes.
Jenkins' double-double featured team highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds, marking her seventh time in 13 games so far this season she posted a double-double. This ranks her No. 1 in the AAC in that category.
Malarie Tallent followed one point shy of her career high with 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting, including 2-for-5 from the perimeter. Eight other Buffs made their way into the scoring column, with Erin Larkin following next with six points.
Milligan led by 10 after a basket by Halie Padgett put the Buffs up 51-41 to open the fourth quarter. After a 7-0 run by Montreat, Milligan pushed the lead back out to seven on a Cali Weddle 3-pointer midway through the final quarter. Montreat would again respond with a 7-0 run, this one to tie the game, before finishing the game with an 8-0 run moments later.
In all, the game included eight ties and five lead changes.
Up next, Milligan faces Brenau on the road Tuesday at 5 p.m., then Union on the road next Saturday at 2 p.m. The next home game for the Buffs is set for Saturday, Jan. 23, against Tennessee Wesleyan. It will end the team's six-game road swing.
