MILLIGAN, Tenn. (Nov. 7, 2020) – Halie Padgett scored a big basket in the closing seconds to help the Milligan University women's basketball seal first-year head coach Kylie Russell's first collegiate coaching victory Saturday in a 76-68 decision over Point.
Milligan (1-2, 1-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) closed the game with the final seven points over the last 20 seconds. It started with an old-fashioned 3-point play from Padgett that put the Buffs up 72-68 and effectively put an end to Point's comeback hopes.
The game featured two ties and seven lead changes, although one tie and six of those lead changes came in the fourth quarter. One such lead change happened midway through the final period as the Skyhawks looked to be in command after a 4-0 run put them up 64-61. The Buffaloes answered with an 8-2 run that swung the lead back in their favor for good, ending with a Padgett field goal with just over one minute left.
"I was really proud of our toughness throughout the game," Russell said after the win. "Outrebounding a team 51-31 proves that. We played with a lot of composure as Point made a strong push in the second half, and we executed our offense as best we have all season."
Game leaders
Freshman Jaycie Jenkins led Milligan with her first collegiate double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. She went 6-for-8 from the floor and added a pair of blocked shots to her tally. Malarie Tallent followed with 11 points off the bench, shooting 3-for-5 from the perimeter, and Cali Weddle scored nine points with six rebounds.
For Point, three players made it to double figures in scoring, led by Iyanna McMillan and Nicole Izuagie who scored 18 points apiece.
