Women’s basketball loses close season opener

MILLIGAN, Tenn. (Nov. 3, 2020) – Freshman Jaycie Jenkins put up 22 points and nine rebounds in her collegiate debut, including a go-ahead 3-pointer inside the last five minutes, but the Milligan University women's basketball team lost to Alice Lloyd 83-74 Tuesday night inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

Milligan led 74-73 with two minutes to go following a tough basket in the lane by Lily Griffith, but Alice Lloyd went on a 10-0 run to end the game.

Scoring leaders

Jenkins and Griffith led the way for the Buffs with 22 points apiece. Jenkins went 7-of-15 from the field and added five of her game-high nine rebounds on the offensive end. Griffith went 7-for-11 from the field and 4-of-6 from three.

Teal Davis came next in the scoring column for Milligan with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Five other Buffs entered the scoring column, most notably Bailey Berry who finished with six points.

For Alice Lloyd, Haley Hall went 9-for-16 from the field to finish with a game-high 26 points. She was the first of three Eagles in double digits for scoring.

Play-by-play

As the final two minutes showed, the game was all about runs. A 15-8 run from Alice Lloyd to start the game put the Eagles up seven within the first four minutes, and they would go ahead by as many as nine in the first quarter. But, Milligan answered with the first eight points of the second quarter to tie the game. Griffith made a pair of 3-pointers in the first two minutes of the second period to help bring the game back to a tie.

The second and third quarters went on to see seven ties and both teams leading by as many as four points.

Hall connected on a 3-pointer to open the fourth-quarter scoring, putting the Eagles up by their largest lead of eight, but Milligan answered back with an 8-0 run to tie the game once again. Jenkins capped the run with an offensive rebound and putback and-one that made it 65-65 with 5:30 left.

After Hall gave the Eagles another lead on the ensuing possession, Jenkins gave Milligan the lead and started a 7-0 run that would nearly finish the Buffs' scoring. Once the Buffs went ahead 72-67, Alice Lloyd finished on a 16-2 run.
