Women’s basketball closes 2019 with narrow loss
Three Buffs made their way into double figures for scoring but it was not enough, as the Milligan College women’s basketball team suffered a 73-66 setback to Alice Lloyd College for the second time this season on Saturday in Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Dec. 30, 2019) – Three Buffs made their way into double figures for scoring but it was not enough, as the Milligan College women's basketball team suffered a 73-66 setback to Alice Lloyd College for the second time this season on Saturday in Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
Milligan led for much of the first half, including a nine-point advantage, but Alice Lloyd came through with a big third quarter on the way to the victory.
Scoring leaders
Halie Padgett led Milligan with 16 points, 12 of which she scored prior to the break. Kaely Gose followed close behind with 15 points and 10 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season, and Lily Griffith scored 12. Cali Weddle also posted a solid effort with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Gose added three steals and three blocks while Padgett and Lauren Baxter added six and four rebounds, respectively.
Alice Lloyd's Haley Hall led all scorers with 20 points on 5-for-19 shooting. She was 2-for-5 from three and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
Game flow
Milligan led by as many as nine and trailed only twice in the first half, in the opening 30 seconds and in the final 30 seconds, but an 8-0 Alice Lloyd run near the end of the second quarter helped the visiting Eagles make it a one-point game at the break. Alice Lloyd then scored the first five points of the second half to surge into the lead for good.
Milligan, down by as many as 15 in the third quarter, cut it as close as six in the final minute, but the Eagles made enough free throws to keep the game out of reach. Gose provided much of the offense during Milligan's would-be comeback, scoring eight points with five rebounds in the final quarter.
