Softball falls at Johnson in AAC doubleheader
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (March 9, 2023) – The Milligan University softball team dropped a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contests at Johnson (Tenn.) on Thursday afternoon. The Buffs were edged 5-4 in game one and downed 7-0 in game two.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (March 9, 2023) – The Milligan University softball team dropped a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contests at Johnson (Tenn.) on Thursday afternoon. The Buffs were edged 5-4 in game one and downed 7-0 in game two.
Milligan falls to 8-4 on the year and 4-4 in AAC play. Johnson moves to 10-2, 5-1 AAC.
Game 1 – Johnson 5, Milligan 4
The Buffs led 4-1 after two innings and 4-2 going into the fifth before the Royals scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to sink the Buffs in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Kate Pendleton and Maggie Johnson had RBI singles and Layney Loyd had a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to help Milligan to a 3-0 lead.
After Johnson scored a run in the bottom of the first, the Buffs' lead rose to 4-1 when Grace Jones singled home McCoy Hensley in the top of the second.
Leading 4-2 in the fifth, the Buffs committed a costly error early in the inning as the runner who reached on the error scored and the Royals scored two more runs on two-out base hits to take a 5-4 lead.
Milligan put two baserunners on in the sixth and seventh innings but could not score the tying run as Johnson escaped with the 5-4 win.
Pendleton had three hits, a run and RBI. Katie Cronin and Hensley had two hits and a run scored each. Grace Jones had a hit, walk, run and RBI.
Forgety was tagged with the loss despite allowing two earned runs in the circle for the Buffs.
Game 2 – Johnson 7, Milligan 0
Game two saw Milligan put a runner on base in all seven innings but Johnson pitcher Lindy Webber held the Buffs off the scoreboard. Johnson scored twice in the first inning, twice in the fourth and added three runs in the fifth for the 7-0 victory.
Jones reached base safely three times as she had two of the Buffs' four hits and walked once.
Kate Pendleton and Bree Presnell each gave up three earned runs. Sadie Shoun worked a scoreless sixth inning.
The Buffs host St. Andrews in an AAC doubleheader Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
