COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 30, 2021) – Erin Forgety carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, ultimately combining with Lainey Mays for a combined no-hitter, and the Milligan University softball team picked up two shutouts against CIU, 4-0 and 10-0, Tuesday afternoon on the road.
Forgety struck out a career high 11 in the game-one effort after losing the perfect game on a hit batter to lead off the seventh. She followed by retiring the next two, then Mays ended the game by coaxing a fly ball from the only batter she faced.
The Buffs, who recently went on a 13-game winning streak, improved to 20-4 (15-3 Appalachian Athletic Conference), an AAC-best for wins and second-best for losses.
Game One | Milligan 4, CIU 0
Forgety's 11 K's topped her previous best of 10 which she did three times already in her career, including two her freshman season.
Grace Jones provided the game's eventual winning run, scoring on an error in the top of the first. Katie Cronin followed moments later with a run scored on a Neelee Griffith single, and two innings later, April Alvarado finished off the scoring with a two-RBI single, bringing home Cronin and Mays.
Alvarado went 3-for-3 to lead the Buffs at the plate in the win.
Game Two | Milligan 10, CIU 0
It took only two innings – the second and the fifth – for the Buffs to put the run-rule into effect. Mays started the scoring with a run on an Allee Griffith base hit in the second, then the Buffs would tally five more on four hits and three errors in the inning. Bailey Cantrell and Cronin both had RBI doubles to help the Buffs go on top 6-0.
A similar story saw the Buffs plate four in the fifth, as CIU committed a pair of errors and the inning began with a Halie King RBI double. Cloee-Anna Merritt added an RBI hit, and Cronin would round out the scoring with a two-run single with two out.
Merritt and Freeman combined for a two-hit shutout, with Merritt striking out five in four innings and Freeman striking out two in the last inning. Cronin, King and Cantrell all finished with two hits.

Milligan hosts its next 10 games, starting with Brenau on Friday and Carolina next Wednesday. The home stretch will help the Buffs even their road-to-home ratio of games as they are 17-3 on the road and 3-1 at home.
