WALESKA, Ga. (March 21, 2021) – After seeing its 13-game winning streak come to an end earlier this week, the Milligan University softball team ended No. 8 Reinhardt's 14-game winning streak in a split doubleheader Sunday afternoon on the road. Milligan came from behind to win game one 8-5 but lost game two 4-1.
The split moved Milligan's record to 17-3 (12-2 Appalachian Athletic Conference) as the Buffaloes now rank No. 1 in the AAC in total wins and No. 3 in total losses.
Game One | Milligan 8, No. 8 Reinhardt 5
Milligan got on the board early with a two-run single from Morgan Overholser giving the Buffs a 2-0 lead, but Reinhardt was quick to swing the lead to 5-2 after a five-run second inning, aided by two Milligan errors.
It would be all the scoring Milligan would allow in game one as Erin Forgety entered in relief and went the last five and two-third innings scoreless.
Meanwhile, Milligan's bats came to life with six runs over the next three innings. April Alvarado, Katie Cronin and Neelee Griffith hit back-to-back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth inning, Griffith's scoring two, to make it 7-5. Then, Lainey Mays rounded out Milligan's scoring with an RBI double in the fifth.
Five Buffs registered two hits in the win, including Griffith who had three RBI's and Alvarado who scored three runs.
Game Two | Milligan 1, No. 8 Reinhardt 4
Reinhardt did all the scoring it needed in the bottom of the first inning, tallying four runs on four hits to go into a lead it would never relinquish.
Kate Pendleton had a double to left field in the second, scoring Griffith who had singled, but that was all the scoring the Buffs would do.
Griffith and Grace Jones both tallied multihit games, and Cloee-Anna Merritt had a similar relief appearance as Forgety had in game one. Merritt went five and one-third scoreless innings, allowing only six hits and one walk.
