WEST POINT, Ga. (March 20, 2021) – The winning streak came to an end at 13 games, but the Milligan University softball team quickly got back on the winning track with a split doubleheader at Point University Saturday on the road. After giving up four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of a 6-2 game-one loss, Milligan answered with a run in the top of the seventh of a 1-0 game-two win.
Cloee-Anna Merritt played a huge part in both roles of Milligan's win in game two. She threw a five-hit shutout, facing only six over the minimum, while providing the game-winning RBI on a sacrifice fly with one out in the seventh.
Milligan's seventh inning started with a Savannah Nocera double to left-center, and Nocera scored the winning run after being moved to third by a Neelee Griffith groundout.
In the first game, Kate Pendleton and Morgan Overholser both provided two-hit efforts, but the Buffs surrendered four runs in a tie ballgame in the bottom of the sixth. Milligan had the early lead in that game as Pendleton (double) and Overholser (single) brought in two runs in the fourth.
Up next, Milligan faces No. 8 Reinhardt Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Buffs will be back home next Saturday, March 27, to face Brenau.
