USTFCCCA honors 16 student-athletes and men’s and women’s track with All-Academic awards
NEW ORLEANS, La. (July 13, 2022) – The Milligan University men’s and women’s track & field teams were honored for their academic prowess by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Wednesday. Both the Milligan men’s and women’s track & field teams earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team status and a total of 16 student-athletes collected USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
NEW ORLEANS, La. (July 13, 2022) – The Milligan University men's and women's track & field teams were honored for their academic prowess by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Wednesday. Both the Milligan men's and women's track & field teams earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team status and a total of 16 student-athletes collected USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
To receive All-Academic Team status, a team must own a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater at the end of the 2021-22 academic year. The criteria for an All-Academic Athlete from the USTFCCCA, one must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and achieve an automatic or provisional qualifying mark in an individual or relay event during the 2021-22 indoor or outdoor track seasons.
Milligan's men's track & field squad owned a 3.4 cumulative GPA, the No. 10 GPA in the NAIA. The Buffs' women posted a 3.524 GPA to finish 17th nationally.
Avery DeWolf Burton headlined Milligan's women's honorees as she earned All-America honors in the indoor 5k and competed at the NAIA National Championships in the outdoor 5k. Burton graduated in April with a 4.0 GPA and became the program's first ever two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American earlier this summer.
On the men's side, Aaron Jones and Will Stockley collected the honor after earning All-American honors during the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track seasons in 2022-23. Milligan men's cross country and track finished the athletic year ranked 11th in the USTFCCA's Program of the Year standings.
Last fall, Milligan became the third institution in NAIA history to sweep national championships in men's and women's cross country. Sophomore Alyssa Bearzi claimed the individual cross country national championship. In total, the Milligan cross country and track teams totaled 16 All-Americans in 2021-22.
