Buffs Men's Tennis Advances to AAC Semis with Quarterfinal Shutout of Montreat
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - On Thursday morning, the (RV) Milligan University men's tennis squad began their quest for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament championship at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. Milligan had the No. 4 seed to begin the tourney, and matched up with the No. 5-seeded Cavaliers of Montreat College. The bout was no trouble for the Buffaloes, as they took home a 5-0 win to advance on to the semifinal round.
The doubles competition saw all three MU doubles pairings notch triumphs. Ryan Thomas and Michal Curlej nabbed a 6-3 win in the top contest, while Thiago Petry and Marcos Moreno combined for the same results in the No. 2 match. Brayden Kennedy and Tomas Tenil also were victorious in the No. 3 doubles matchup by a final of 6-2.
Gonzaga Lafarga continued his dominant play in the No. 1 singles spot, dispatching his opponent by a 6-1, 6-1 final tally. Milligan's next win came from the No. 3 match, where Curlej concocted a simple 6-3, 6-3 triumph to put the Buffs up 3-0. Then, Martin Mercarder snatched a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 4 tilt, before Petry ended the contest with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 decision in the No. 5 matchup.
Next up for the Buffales is a matchup with the top-seeded Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan University, who are currently listed at No. 2 in the nation in the most recent NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Rating. The semifinal matchup will start at 10 a.m. on Friday morning.
