Milligan Men's Tennis Vanquishes Lawrence Tech, Women Drop Tight Tilt
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Milligan University's tennis squads made the trip to Hilton Head, S.C. for non-conference battles against the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils on Wednesday. The teams spilt on the afternoon, as the men won 5-2 and the Buffs women fell short in a tight 4-3 contest.
For the men in singles, Michal Curlej won the No. 3 match, besting the Blue Devil 6-1, 7-5. Martin Mercarder came out on top in the No. 4 match, as he triumphed over his opponent, 7-6, 6-1. Thiago Petry supplied Milligan's third singles point with his No. 5 match win. He outlasted the Blue Devil 6-4 in the first set, and finished him off 6-1 in convincing fashion. Rounding out the singles points, Marcos Moreno defeated his counterpart in the No. 6 match by a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Milligan's men outdueled Lawrence Tech in the doubles competition with a pair of triumphs. The pairing of Petry and Moreno earned a victory in the No. 1 doubles matchup, 6-4. The Buffs secured the doubles point with the No. 2 matchup going to the pair of Curlei and Ryan Thomas, 6-3.
The women came one three-set tiebreak short of the victory against Lawrence Tech. Sophie Dunman earned the No. 2 matchup conquest with a 6-4, 6-3 showing. The next Buff in the win column was Lauren Wimmer with her positive result in the No. 3 match 7-5, 7-5. The last singles win came via the No. 5 matchup where Laurel Rich emerged victorious, 6-4, 6-4.
Unfortunately in the three hard-fought doubles tilts, the Milligan women were unable to conquer the Blue Devils, falling 7-6, 7-5, and 6-4.
Tomorrow, Mar. 13, the Buffs squads will do battle with Coastal Georgia in a pair of non-conference matchups starting at 11:30 a.m. in Hilton Head, S.C.
