MILLIGAN, Tenn. (March 8, 2021) – The Milligan University men's and women's tennis teams lost to nationally-ranked St. Thomas Monday afternoon at Mathes Tennis Center. The men fell to No. 18 St. Thomas 5-2 while the women fell to No. 25 St. Thomas 6-1.
Milligan picked up the doubles point on the men's side after Taylor Graalman and Mason Grear combined for a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles and Carter Rigsby and Griffin Leonard combined for a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. However, St. Thomas bounced back with five of the six victories in singles action, only Charlie Moseley winning at No. 6 singles. Moseley, in fact, needed a third set super tiebreaker, and extra points at that, coming away a 6-2, 2-6, 16-14 winner.
Graalman forced a close second set in his match at No. 3 singles, falling in a tiebreak, and Derian Janeke won his second set but lost in a deciding third at No. 4 singles.
Similarly on the women's side, Marlaina Peterson and Macy Kennedy won at No. 3 singles in easy fashion, 6-0, but the Buffaloes only picked up one win in singles. Karson Light won that match at No. 5, 6-2, 7-6.
Up next, Milligan hosts Montreat Saturday at 2 p.m. and Mars Hill Sunday at 1 p.m., weather pending.
