Tennis wins against Wise
The Milligan University tennis teams won Saturday against UVa.-Wise with the men winning in an easy sweep, 7-0, and the women winning by a narrow decision, 4-3. Marlaina Peterson earned the clinching point for Milligan’s women in the last match to finish.
HARROGATE, Tenn. (Feb. 20, 2021) – The Milligan University tennis teams won Saturday against UVa.-Wise with the men winning in an easy sweep, 7-0, and the women winning by a narrow decision, 4-3. Marlaina Peterson earned the clinching point for Milligan's women in the last match to finish.
The Milligan men opened their 2020-21 season with wins of every set. Jose Giler won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and the rest of the Buffs combined to drop only nine games. This came after Milligan swept the doubles with scores of 6-1, 6-1, and 6-4, Mason Grear and Carter Rigsby teaming up in the No. 1 spot.
Peterson provided the clinching point for the women, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, and marked a finish to a nice comeback for the Buffs. Wise took the doubles point to start the day before winning at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Milligan finished with wins at Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6, all in straight sets.
Up next, Milligan's men face Tusculum at home on Sunday, Feb. 21. Both teams will be home next Saturday, Feb. 27, against Mars Hill beginning at 1 p.m. Appalachian Athletic Conference play begins March 2.
