Three more school records on day two of Gamecock Invite
COLUMBIA, S.C. (November 16, 2023) – The Milligan University swim teams broke three school records and recorded four NAIA No. 1 times on the second day of the Gamecock Invitational the University of South Carolina on Thursday.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (November 16, 2023) – The Milligan University swim teams broke three school records and recorded four NAIA No. 1 times on the second day of the Gamecock Invitational the University of South Carolina on Thursday.
The Buffs opened the evening session with a school record in the 200-yard medley relay. Tyler Cates, Kaylee Williams, Gabby MacPherson and Hanne te Velthuis swam 1:46.29 to set the record with a national No. 1 time.
Milligan's men also recorded a national No. 1 swim in the men's 200 medley relay with Paxton Smith, Caleb Fry, Hudson Trammell and Stephen Gilbert finishing in 1:31.27.
Trammell set a Milligan record and recorded the nation's top time in the 100-yard butterfly. He swam 49.39 in the morning session. Sergio Tudor (49.62), Ethan McCosh (50.47), Cole Brusher (50.84) and RJ Brumit (50.95) each logged provisional marks in the event.
Gilbert finished fifth in championship finals and posted the national No. 1 time in the 400-yard individual medley. He was joined by four other provisional national qualifiers in Peter Gilbert (4:10.34), Jack Allen (4:12.13), Nate Halloran (4:13.77) and Michael Cellucci (4:13.77).
Fry finished sixth in championship finals in the 100-yard breaststroke. He swam 54.86, narrowly missing out on an NAIA "A" standard and the program record. Ben Hawkins (57.90), Jack Allen (58.77) and John Cox (59.19) swam to provisional standards in the event.
Seven men had provisional efforts in the 200-yard freestyle. Andre Bazzana (1:41.94) led the way in the morning session and was joined by Jayden Bearden (1:42.29), Jacob Miller (1:42.86), Nicholas Harviel (1:44.90), Zac Nelson (1:46.01), Peter Gilbert (1:46.44) and Halloran (1:46.67).
Six Buffs posted provisional-qualifying swims in the men's 100-yard backstroke. Smith led the way at 50.85. McCosh (52.53), Brumit (52.96), Ben Tomberlin (53.57), Simon Popelka (53.41) and Adam Bengtson (54.21) notched national provisional cuts.
Williams (1:05.64) and Mirella Rutigliano (1:09.70) hit provisional times in the 100 breast.
Samantha van Vuure (4:40.54) and Mary Grace Bitting (4:37.57) notched provisional marks in the 400 IM. Cates (58.68) and van Vuure (59.45) collected provisional marks in the 100 back.
MacPherson (57.53), Suzy Aguirre (59.27) and Alex Hayashi (1:00.47) posted provisional swims in the 100 fly.
Te Velthuis (1:57.17), Riley Renaud (1:57.76) and Liz Mahan (1:59.23) had provisional swims in the 200 free.
