No. 11 Buffs Men's Soccer Escapes with Tight Triumph over St. Andrews
LAURINBURG, N.C. – On Wednesday, the No. 11-ranked Milligan University men's soccer program faced off with Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) foe, St. Andrews University away from home. The Buffaloes and Knights traded five goals in the opening half, with the visiting Buffs coming out with a 3-2 lead, before both offenses went dormant in the second half of a 3-2 MU triumph.
The first breakthrough came in the opening minutes, as Elies Simo blasted his second goal of the season into the net on an assist from Kai Slinn to make it 1-0 in just the third minute. The Knights would not fade away, however, as they scored next in the 18th minute to tie the tally. Simen Haraldstad then provided another tiebreaking goal in the 24th minute off Slinn's second assist of the game. Less than two minutes later, St. Andrews tied the score yet again at 2-2. What would end up being the deciding goal of the bout came off the boot of Justin Madejski, as the second Milligan defender to score in the match. He received an assist from Alexsander Krogh in the 39th minute to put Milligan up 3-2.
The second half was mostly uneventful, except for a pair of yellow cards by the same SAU player in the 70th and 79th minutes to put the Knights down a man for the rest of the matchup. Milligan only allowed the Knights to take a single shot in the second half, stifling them en route to the 3-2 victory.
Overall, the Buffs took 26 shots in the game, with 11 of them testing the SAU goalkeeper. St. Andrews took six, but five of them came in the opening half. Slinn took six total shots and was on net with a pair of those tries, while Simo, Haraldstad and Albert Montragull each hit the mark on two of their three shots, with Simo and Haraldstad converting on tallies. Krogh also took three shots and threatened the net with one, along with Jett Carter, who posted the same line.
Adria Alles had a slow start in net, allowing the only two shots on frame that he faced to reach the back of the net in the first half, but he came away with a win after the squad stepped up all around in the second half of play. His season record moves to 3-0-0.
The Buffaloes now come back home for three straight matchups at Anglin Field, starting with a tilt against Reinhardt on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m., as Milligan looks for their fourth win in a row.
