MILLIGAN, Tenn. – The Milligan University men's soccer team emerged victorious in dominant 5-1 fashion in their home-opening match of 2024 on Saturday evening at Anglin Field against NCAA Division II opponent, King University.
With the triumph, Milligan has started their season 2-0-0 with a plus-13 goal differential.
Early on, the Buffaloes scored in just the 3rd minute on an Elies Simo goal assisted by Kai Slinn. After 27 minutes, James Bakou unleashed a cannon from range to score the second goal of the match, unassisted. Simen Haraldstad would then be set up by Bakou for the third Milligan goal in the 35th minute, concluding the scoring for the Buffs in the first half.
About ten minutes into half number two, Slinn would join the goal-scoring parade with an unassisted tally in the 55th minute. The final goal for Milligan in the bout came off the boot of Marco Lattanzi, and was assisted by Slinn to make it 5-0 in the 66th minute. King did score a consolation goal in the 81st minute, but it was far from enough to catch the dominant Buffaloes.
The Buffs took a total of 19 shots in the match, with 10 of those being on frame. Lattanzi led the squad and was the only player to launch two shots on goal. Bakou, Simo, Haraldstad, Slinn, Unai Cruz, Alexsander Krogh, Olly Green and Jett Carter each supplied one shot on net.
Ludvig Wille faced three shots on goal in the battle, sending back two of them. The remaining shot went past him in the 81st minute for the Tornado's only goal. He moves to 2-0-0 on the season with the victory.
WVU Tech (W.Va.) will be coming to town on Thursday, Sept. 5 for a midweek matchup with the Buffs at Anglin Field. Kick off is slated for 5 p.m., as Milligan looks to conclude non-conference play unbeaten.
