No. 22 Men’s Soccer advances to AAC semifinals with double OT win over Reinhardt
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (November 3, 2023) – Jett Carter scored in the 106th minute in double overtime to deliver the No. 22 Milligan University soccer team past Reinhardt 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament on Friday evening at Anglin Field.
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (November 3, 2023) – Jett Carter scored in the 106th minute in double overtime to deliver the No. 22 Milligan University soccer team past Reinhardt 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament on Friday evening at Anglin Field.
The Buffs move to 14-2-3 on the season while Reinhardt concludes the year at 9-5-5. Milligan's unbeaten streak runs to 15 consecutive games with the result. The Buffs advance to the AAC semifinals for the third time in the last four seasons.
Despite the Buffs outshooting Reinhardt 16-6 over the first 100 minutes of action, the two teams entered a second overtime in a scoreless game.
As the clock ticked under four minutes to play in the second overtime, Inaki Moreno flicked a pass toward the left post onto a charging Carter who poked in the deciding tally.
The Buffs outshot the Eagles 18-8 (7-3 SOG) and had an 11-4 edge in corner kicks.
Reinhardt had the first true scoring opportunity of the game in the 20th minute with a pair of left-angled shots on frame. Adria Alles made a kick save on the first shot and a diving stop on the rebound attempt.
Carter put an attempt on frame with a left-footed shot in the 27th minute that was tipped just wide of the goal by the Reinhardt goalie.
Both teams had stretches where they controlled possession but neither team could pull ahead in the first half. The Buffs held a slight 6-5 edge in shots while Reinhardt had a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Santiago Corral had a header saved in the opening minutes of the second half off a free kick by Moreno. Moreno set up for a shot a minute later that was denied again.
Moreno found Corral for a point-blank header in the 67th and it was stopped again. Asa Kai Blake had a close-range attempt at the left post blocked in the 84th.
Despite the Buffs outshooting Reinhardt 9-2 in the second half, the game remained scoreless through the end of regulation to trigger two 10-minute overtime minutes.
Alles made three saves in the win as the Buffs recorded their third-straight shutout.
The Buffs host No. 4 seed St. Andrews in the AAC Tournament semifinals on Tuesday evening at 5:00 p.m.
