MILLIGAN, Tenn. (March 10, 2021) – Inaki Moreno scored an equalizer in the first half, then Jett Carter scored the winning goal in the second half as the Milligan University men's soccer team moved one step closer to the Appalachian Athletic Conference title with a 2-1 win over CIU Wednesday afternoon on Anglin Field.
Milligan moved to (9-1, 8-1 AAC) with its fourth straight win and is now only one win away from the AAC regular-season title.
"I am really proud of this group," Head Coach David Lilly said. "They consistently face adversity and find ways to come out stronger because of it. CIU are very talented, and we had to be very gritty and focused today. The guys deserve tons of credit for their resilience. We will recover from this game and switch our focus to a top Tennessee Wesleyan team this week. We are looking forward to the opportunity next Thursday."
Buffs worry little about early scare
CIU was the first to strike, and it came on a counterattack despite Milligan getting nearly all the first-half chances. The goal came just 20 minutes in, but the Buffs answered 12 minutes later with Moreno's fifth goal of the season. Charlie Betts was credited with the assist on a pass he delivered to Moreno in the box.
Carter gave Milligan the winning goal early in the second half after a long throw-in from Ethan Bishop found Carter in the middle of the penalty area. Carter headed it in for his fifth goal of the season as well.
Up next
Milligan plays for the AAC regular-season title next Thursday, March 18, at Tennessee Wesleyan. Tennessee Wesleyan was the AAC preseason favorite.
