ELZIABETHTON, Tenn. (March 4, 2021) – The Milligan University men's soccer team picked up right where it left off last fall, defeating No. 14 WVU Tech 3-2 under the lights of Citizens Bank Stadium Thursday night. Inaki Moreno scored twice to bookend a goal by Jett Carter.
The win marked the third straight for Milligan and improved the Buffaloes to 8-1.
Moreno opened the scoring early, in the 13th minute, after an assist from Charlie Betts, and despite a flurry of scoring in the second half, the Buffaloes would lead the rest of the way. Carter made it 2-0 in the 27th minute, only seconds after entering the match, finishing from close range with an assist from Moreno.
WVU Tech cut Milligan's lead to 2-1 in the 67th minute before Moreno would extend it back out to 3-1 on a goal assisted by Raphael Sefriou in the 79th minute.
"Lots of positives to take away from tonight's performance and a very encouraging start to our spring semester," Head Coach David Lilly said after the win. "WVU Tech are a top team who have been excelling at a national level for years now. They are very well coached and we had to earn everything. We played well for long periods of the game but made life difficult for ourselves at times as well. We are excited to get back to work and build on this momentum."
Up next, Milligan plays two important Appalachian Athletic Conference games, both with regular-season championship implications. First, the Buffs host CIU next Wednesday, March 10. Then, they will go to Tennessee Wesleyan the following Thursday, March 18. If the Buffs win the next two games, they will win the AAC regular season for the first time since winning it back-to-back in 2011 and 2012.
