BLUEFIELD, Va. (Oct. 13, 2020) – The Milligan University men's soccer team moved into first place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tuesday after defeating Bluefield 4-0 on the road. Freshman Victor Castel scored the eventual match-winning goal in just the fifth minute.
At 4-0, the Buffs are off to their best start since 2018 when the team started 3-0 but lost the fourth match of the season. It is the best start for the team through four games since the 2009 team started 3-0-1.
Castel's goal was his fifth of the season, a number that puts him into the sole lead in the AAC among goal scorers. At 4-0, the Buffs also have the sole lead in the AAC as a team, three points ahead of preseason favorite Tennessee Wesleyan (3-0) and St. Andrews (3-2).
Charlie Betts followed Castel's goal with one in the 25th minute and Andre Levarity scored in the 37th minute to send the Buffs into the break ahead 3-0. Jett Carter rounded out the scoring in the second half with a little padding to the lead in the 76th minute.
Milligan outshot Bluefield 20-2 in the win, including 11-1 on shots on goal. Goalkeeper Jan Kuepper made one save.
Up next, Milligan travels to Cleveland, Georgia, Saturday for a 7 p.m. game against Truett McConnell. The Buffs' next home game is set for Wednesday, Oct. 28, against Montreat.
