DAYTON, Tenn. (Sept. 16, 2020) – Freshman Victor Castel broke open the scoring less than one minute into the match on the way to two goals and a 3-1 win for the Milligan University men's soccer team Wednesday night at Bryan.
The victory helped Milligan avenge a narrow 2-1 loss to Bryan in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament last season and proved to be an upset as Bryan entered the 2020 season as the preseason No. 3 ranked team in the AAC. Bryan posted an 8-2-1 AAC record last season to finish as the runner-up in the league.
Castel's early goal gave Milligan a lead right away, although his later goal in the 61st minute turned out to be the game winner and all the scoring the Buffs would need. After Bryan cut the lead in half with a goal in the 80th minute, sophomore Inaki Moreno found sophomore Alex Frances with a crossing pass and Frances put it away from close range to help seal the win.
Milligan and Bryan posted an even shot count at 10 shots apiece, although Bryan led with a 6-5 advantage on shots on goal. Goalkeeper Jan Kuepper made four saves in the win.
Up next, Milligan holds its home opener on Anglin Field when the Buffs face Point University Saturday at 5 p.m.
