Garrido named All-America honorable mention
Senior Roberto Fernandez Garrido of the Milligan College men’s soccer team has been selected as a 2019 NAIA All-America honorable mention, as announced by the NAIA office Wednesday afternoon. Garrido was previously voted the Appalachian Athletic Conference player of the year and led the nation in scoring this season.
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Dec. 11, 2019) – Senior Roberto Fernandez Garrido of the Milligan College men's soccer team has been selected as a 2019 NAIA All-America honorable mention, as announced by the NAIA office Wednesday afternoon. Garrido was previously voted the Appalachian Athletic Conference player of the year and led the nation in scoring this season.
Garrido, who also made the AAC All-Conference first team, scored 25 goals in 17 matches this season, ranking No. 1 in the NAIA by a long shot in scoring average. Only one player (26 goals in 20 matches) scored more total goals in 2019.
Garrido's average of 1.47 goals per game featured him scoring multiple goals seven times and four hat tricks. Garrido tallied a career high of five in Milligan's big win over Kentucky Christian University on Oct. 23, an effort that helped him garner NAIA Player of the Week on Oct. 29. Other noteworthy scoring efforts for Garrido this season included him scoring two match-winning goals and scoring twice in the team's 3-1 win over No. 19 Tennessee Wesleyan.
Garrido and the Buffs finished the season 6-11 overall (5-6 AAC) and suffered a narrow loss, 2-1, to No. 2 seed Bryan College in the quarterfinals of the AAC tournament.
