Milligan Men's and Women's Golf Win Northeast Tennessee Spring Shootout, de Bethencourt Takes Men's Title
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - On Tuesday, the Milligan University men's and women's golf teams hosted their Northeast Tennessee Spring Shootout and both were able to bring home event titles. The men outplayed nine other programs, while the No. 10-ranked Milligan women took home the trophy in a field of six squads.
The Milligan men saw Francisco de Bethencourt nab an individual title in the two-round event. The 36-hole day saw him shoot a three-under-par score of 141. He had a five-under round of 67 in the second round to solidify his victory.
Esteban Hicks and Hjalmar Liljenberg tied for 16th as the next Milligan finishers, shooting 10-over-par for the event. They were each very consistent, as Hicks shot 77 in both rounds and Liljenberg shot a 76 and a 78.
Gustaf Lundberg came in at a 12-over-par mark of 156 strokes to tie for 20th, as Manueal Gutierrez also nabbed a 156 to tie with G. Lundberg.
For the women, Kate Castle finished third with a total of 155 strokes at 11-over-par. After an 80-shot round to begin the day, she improved her second-round score to 75 to notch a top-three result.
Mallory TeVrucht (+13), Bailey McGaha (+14) and Sarah Castle (+17) all reached the top seven, placing fifth, sixth and seventh in the tournament standings.
They were followed by Catalina Easley in ninth and Liz Miller, who tied for 10th.
Milligan's women will play this coming Monday and Tuesday, Apr. 7-8 at the Music City Collegiate at the Hermitage Golf Club in Nashville, Tenn., while the men have a hiatus until the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Spring Championship on Apr. 21-22.
