Carter Counts wins Nick England Memorial as Buffs take top two spots in team standings
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (October 11, 2021) – Sophomore Carter Counts captured medalist honors and the Milligan University golf team took the top two spots in the team standings at the Nick England Memorial at the Cattails at Meadowview on Monday.
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (October 11, 2021) – Sophomore Carter Counts captured medalist honors and the Milligan University golf team took the top two spots in the team standings at the Nick England Memorial at the Cattails at Meadowview on Monday.
Both Milligan's "orange" and "black" squads tied first firs place at plus-eight 292 over 18 holes on Monday. The two teams advanced to a five-hole playoff where Milligan "orange" emerged as the event champions with Milligan "black" snagging runner-up honors. Emory & Henry finished one stroke back at 293 and UVA-Wise took fourth in the event at 296.
Counts fired a three-under 68, which tied for the top 18-hole score with Milligan's Alvaro Huidobro and Emory & Henry's Jhon Ojeda. The trio went to a playoff to determine the medalist and runner-up. All three players birdied the first hole but Counts took home his first collegiate individual win with a birdie on No. 2 while the other two players parred. Huidobro went on to earn second place on the next hole of the tiebreaker.
Dane Rheinecker of Milligan "orange" and Nick Brock of Milligan "black" tied for fifth with both players carding a one-over 73.
Jonathan Liggett tied for ninth with a plus-two 74 for "orange." Reece Anderson tied for 11th with a 75 and Reece Walker tied for 14th (76) for "black."
Ty Beasley shot 77, Samuel Prater posted a 78 and Brandon Hammond turned in an 80.
Individuals Josh Owens and Seth Bible logged 76 and 79, respectively.
Milligan men's golf heads to the AAC Fall Championship at the Barnsley Resort in Adairsville, Ga. next Monday.
