LAS VEGAS (April 18, 2023) – Milligan University freshman Cameron Shockey became the first bowler in school history to compete at the United States Bowling Congress' (USBC) Intercollegiate Singles Championship (ISC) at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Shockey was one of 24 national qualifiers to earn a spot in Vegas after winning the USBC ISC sectional title with the nation's No. 1 score of 1,451 pins in six games.
The ISC national championship began with six games of qualifying on Tuesday afternoon. Shockey posted a total of 1,107 pins (184.5 average) to slot 23rd for the head-to-head bracket play.
"In the six games of seeding, Cameron had some good looks but just couldn't string strikes together," said head coach Brian Rickert. "The oil pattern was a tough shot that penalized small misses with splits or washouts.
Shockey matched up with 10th-seeded Brett Lloyd from Mount Mercy for a three-game total-pin match. Shockey put up 526 pins (175.33 average) but was eliminated by Lloyd in the first round.
"In match play, Cameron couldn't repeat shots and by the time he started stringing strikes, it was game three and you can't get that far behind against the top talent in the country," said Rickert.
In Milligan's second season of men's bowling the Buffs reached the elimination final at the South States Athletic Conference and earned the team's first invitation to the USBC's ISC and Intercollegiate Team Sectionals. The Buffs climbed from No. 149 in the 2021-22 Collegiate Bowling national rankings to No. 75 at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.
"Cameron proved by making it this far that he's one of the bowlers to watch going into his sophomore year," said Rickert. "I'm so proud of him for working this year as hard as he has and know he's not going to rest this summer. As we said all year, 'get better every day…results don't make you a success, it's the daily grind.'"
