SMYRNA, Tenn. (March 10, 2023) – Milligan University freshman Cameron Shockey claimed the 2023 Smyrna Intercollegiate Singles Sectional championships and is one of 24 national qualifiers who will compete for the intercollegiate singles national championship in Las Vegas in April.
"Cameron came out locked in from game one," said Rickert. "He was able to stay on that line and we just made small adjustments as the lanes transitioned."
In Milligan bowling's first-ever sectional appearance, Shockey became the program's inaugural tournament champion. Across six games, Shockey totaled 1,451 pins to win the sectional qualifier by 58 pins.
"Coming into the day I felt no pressure," said Shockey. "Being a freshman I had nothing to prove and no expectations. I had a really good look in practice and I was able to stay with it throughout the entire tournament."
After opening with a 256, Shockey scored a Milligan single-game record of 299 pins in his second game. He followed with efforts of 180, 236, 246 and 234 to finish with an average of 241.83 pins.
"Game one I came out of the gate with a big score of 256 feeling very comfortable," said Shockey. "I carried my momentum into game two shooting an almost perfect 299. Game three was the only game where I experienced some troubles where my ball reaction wasn't what I was looking for but I was able to get out with a 180 after making a few key spares. I was able to rebound in game four and five and have a little relief holding a lead going into game six. In game six I stayed poised finish strong. I'd say I had a great day not only physically but mentally, keeping my head throughout competition."
The Buffs' second finish in the 181-bowler field was Caleb McDonald, who placed 38th with 1,224 pins (204.0 average). McDonald went over 200 four times, including a high game of 244.
Xander Stephens placed 58th with 1,176 pins (196.0 average) with three games over 200 and a high of 227. Jackson McRae also notched a top-half finish in 77th with 1,135 pins (189.17 average).
Shockey and the next five finishers advance to the ISC Singles National Championships April 17-22 in Las Vegas.
"This wasn't a fluke," said Rickert. "He came out of today scoring higher than the entire field and should be one to watch in the finals."
Milligan bowling continues at the Smyrna Bowling Center with the ITC Team Sectionals tomorrow and Sunday.
